Historical Note: Pope Urban II spoke out against the control of Palestine by the Seljuk Turks in 1095 AD. Several months later, the first crusade left to liberate Jerusalem from the Muslims. It was the only crusade to meet with success.

Rome, 1096 AD – The first crusade has just begun, but some Christians are beginning to question whether it really is God’s will to send an army to kill a bunch of Muslims. Fortunately, Pope Urban has a holy motive for this war!

“I am only doing what Jesus told me to do.” His eminence declared soon after the last knights disappeared over the horizon. “I am sure that since Muhammad and his followers have been conquering kingdoms in the middle east, they must want to be conquered themselves. I am giving them what they want, which is what I would want them to do to me.”

No one has yet suggested to the Pope that he may not really want Muhammad’s followers to purposefully misinterpret his actions in return.
